Specialist note

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague and Dr. Léon Krempel for their assistance in identifying this painting as an early work by Nicolaes Maes, after a portrait by Jacob Gerritsz, Cuyp (1594-1651/2).

The present work is being offered for sale pursuant to a settlement agreement between the consignor and the heirs of Gustaaf Hamburger, represented by Mondex Corporation of Toronto, Canada. This resolves any dispute over ownership of the work and title will pass to the buyer.
