Specialist note
The commodes are inspired by 18th-century examples by Nicolas Petit (see one sold anonymously, Christie's, Monaco, 1 July 1995, lot 97) and by Godefroy Dester, such as a near pair formerly in the collection of Mrs. Anna Thomson Dodge (sold Christie's, London, 16 December 1999, lot 120). The similarity of 18th century commodes stamped by different cabinet-makers can be explained by the close collaboration that existed between ébénistes and marchands-merciers in this period.
