Claude Gellée, called Claude Lorrain (1604-1682)
L'Apparition (Mannocci 5)
etching, circa 1630, watermark Fleur-de-Lys in a crowned Circle (M. 15a; similar to Haewood 1632, Rome, early 17th cent.), a very fine, early impression of Mannocci's very rare first state A (of five), before the scratches which occur already in later impressions of the first state, very similar to the impression in the Bibliothèque Nationale, but apparently more tonal, with narrow margins, in very good condition
P. 104 x 171 mm., S. 108 x 173 mm.

Specialist note

According to Mannocci, only impressions of the first state can be considered contemporary, all other states are posthumous.
He records six impressions of the present first state A in public collections: one in Amsterdam, one in London, three in Paris and one in Vienna. The present impression compares favourably to the impression in the British Museum.
