Each with a pierced shield back centred by a Prince of Wales feather motif and downswept arms, on square tapering legs with spade feet, minor differences in height and construction, the decoration almost certainly refreshed, re-upholstered

Specialist note

The backs of these chairs correspond closely to a number of sets produced by Gillows in the 1780s known as feather and drapery pattern or Prince's pattern. They were one of the firm's most expensive chairs, notable for the elegant arm and the variety of finishes available, both in the carving and painting.
