Specialist note

Leland Stanford (1824-1893) was a United States Senator, the eighth Governor of California and a leader in the railroad industry, acting as director of Wells Fargo and Company and the Southern Pacific Railroad. He and his wife, Jane, founded Stanford University in 1885. The University retains a portrait of Stanford by Matilda Lotz in its collection.
