Strasse in Scheveningen depicts a street of the fishing village of Scheveningen in the Netherlands. A study of the same size exists depicting an empty street, but in this work, Max Lieberman chose to fill the lifeless street with numerous figures. Some of the people stand in small groups whilst others are conversing. Lieberman spent the summer of 1881 in the villages of Scheveningen and Katwijk and painted streets as his primary subject matter. These street scenes are more delicate and lighter than his more typical works of the same year. This work was in the private collection of publisher and gallery owner Bruno Cassirer who loaned it for several exhibitions before being exiled to England in 1938. The work has stayed with his family ever since.
