Edith Norma Shearer was one of the most popular actresses in North America in the 1920s and 30s. Known for playing sexually liberated and sophisticated women in films, such as The Divorcee, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress, she is recognised also for her contribution to fashion, through the designs of Adrian and is widely celebrated by some as one of cinema's feminist pioneers. This and the following lot were bought by Shearer to house her collection of shoes and gowns when she travelled. The shoe trunk features boxes labelled with descriptions of the shoes they contained.
