Specialist note

Rolex introduced the Explorer model in 1953, and by 1962 the reference 1016 appeared in Rolex catalogue. It quickly became ones of Rolex's most popular sport watches, the first examples being used by mountain climbers.

The reference 1016 is the most well-known edition of the Explorer model, and has enjoyed the longest production run. It is similar in design to the reference 6610, but features a caliber 1560 or 1570 and has a water resistance to 100m.

The reference 1016 was replaced in 1989 with the reference 14270, which featured a number of design changes and a different caliber.
