Specialist note

In 1909 and 1911 Epstein made three bronze sculptures of Nan Coudron, a 'lanky gipsy model' (E. Silber, The Sculpture of Epstein, Oxford, 1986, p. 19). The present work is a direct study for the 11 in. high bronze sculpture, Nan (The Dreamer), 1911 (see Silber, loc. cit., p. 129, no. 36). Silber writes 'In Nan (The Dreamer) (no. 36) and Nan Seated (no. 38), he defers to his model's native, angular grace, implicitly rejecting any fictional ideal of beauty' (ibid, p. 19).
