Specialist note

Ann Lee was the daughter of the nurseryman James Lee of Hammersmith (1715-1795). He ran The Vineyard Nursery which was a thriving enterprise that introduced plants to English cultivation, particularly from the Cape, America, Australia and from China. Ann Lee was a pupil of Sydney Parkinson (d. 1771) and a skilled botanical artist, but tragically died young. A large collection of her illustrations are housed at Kew Gardens.
