Emma Sandys (1834-1877)
A young female musician
signed with monogram and dated '1864' (upper left)
oil on panel
13 x 11 in. (33 x 28 cm.)

Note du spécialiste

The present painting is typical of Sandys' highly-detailed female head portraits; the Eastern dress and fig tree suggest that it may portray a character from the Bible such as Miriam the prophetess who 'took a timbrel in her hand' as the Israelites crossed the Red Sea out of Egypt (Exodus 15:20).
