Specialist note
Professor David R. Marshall dates this painting to the late activity of Viviano Codazzi, towards the end of the 1660s, comparing the foliage and the masonry to that in a Capriccio with ruined arches and peasants dancing in a private collection, signed with initals and dated 1668 (see Marshall, op. cit., p. 331, no. VC195). A yet unidentified figure painter is responsible for the staffage.
