Louis de Caullery (Cambrai 1555-1622 Antwerp)

This composition may be loosely based on a painting by Frans Francken the Younger in the Museum of Fine Arts, Bucharest (inv. no. 1989), however the stylized figures, in their splendid plumed helmets, turbans and exotic headdresses, are very much Caullery’s own invention. The motif of a youth astride a prancing horse in the immediate foreground recurs in a number of the artist’s paintings.
