This painting was gifted to the present owner in 1950 - despite moving house several times, he still kept the painting by his side until the present day.

Specialist note

This painting depicts of the garden of the present owner's house, which at the time was located next to the Kowloon Castle Peak Hotel, facing the sea. Zhang Daqian stayed there for over half a year, during which he would paint and write calligraphy under the pavilion in the garden with several of his pet gibbons nearby.
