Specialist note

Edward Burd (1749-1833) was a Revolutionary War officer and later a chief court clerk of Pennsylvania. He served as a trustee of The Academy and College of Philadelphia and retained his position when the school became the University of Pennsylvania in 1791. His niece Elizabeth Burd Patterson married Charles Willson Peale's son, Rubens Peale, on March 6, 1820. The present work was a wedding gift to Elizabeth from the artist.
