Specialist note

Victoria, Princess Royal (1840-1901) was the eldest child of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819-1861). In 1858 she married Prince Frederick William of Prussia (1831-1888), subsequently becoming German Empress when her husband ascended the throne in 1888. However, after reigning for only 99 days, Frederick died. Victoria, like her mother, wore mourning clothes for the rest of her life. They had eight children together, including Emperor Wilhelm II (1859-1941).
