Specialist note

The sitter in this miniature was formerly called Master George Forrester. An entry for this sitter does exist in William Wood's Memorandum of Miniatures painted and finished by William Wood, of the Royal Academy 1790-1808, London, [unpublished manuscript at the Victoria & Albert Museum], no. 5929, but the size of that miniature differs from the present lot, and as that work was painted in 1802, that sitter, 'Master Geo. Forrester, son of Mr & Lady Catharine (Manners)' (later called John George Weld-Forester, 2nd Baron Forester) would have only been one year old when he was painted.
