A SET OF EIGHT MAHOGANY OPEN ARMCHAIRS
SIX GEORGE III, LATE 18TH CENTURY, TWO LATER
Each with a rectangular back with three vertical beaded splats, centred by roundels and with leaf terminals, above a green leather loose cushion, panelled rails and square tapering legs, some batten carrying holes, one labelled 'PRI/t76 9'

The Georgian chairs acquired from N. Ayer, Bath in the early 1960s;
The pair of later chairs made by Mallett, 1972.

Specialist note

A closely related set of chairs with the same pattern back is recorded at Northampton Park, Rutland, illustrated in Christopher Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, Leeds, 1978, vol. II, p.102, fig. 171. Others of this pattern were supplied to the Earls of Highclere, Highclere Castle, Hampshire, illustrated in Mark Girouard 'Highclere Castle', Country Life, 13 August 1959, p. 20, fig. 10.
