This pair of basting spoons formed part of the silver service issued to the 4th Earl of Chesterfield for official diplomatic use as English ambassador to the Hague. The Jewel House warrant, issued 12 September 1727, supplied the Earl with "the usual allowance of plate," which included 5,893 oz. of silver and 1,066 oz. of silver-gilt.
