FIRST QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY
Of typical baluster form, the hollow handle extending in a loop around the rim and punctuated with three nozzles, the neck pierced with three circular flower medallions alternating with groups of six flower petals, painted in bright colours and enriched in gilding with a continuous hunting scene including horsemen, a lion and a boar amongst trees with a town in the distance, above a trelliswork border reserved with four Kakiemon flower panels, the neck decorated with iron-red and gilt flowers and the handle with blue and gilt leaves with green scrolls, one nozzle restored, minor wear to enamels and gilding, slight flaking to glaze

Specialist note

Puzzle-jugs are most commonly found in English and Dutch delftware and were generally decorated in blue and white. Examples painted in enamels and decorated in gilding are rare, and this example is also unusual for its small size. An example of similar size, painted in a similar palette with Chinese boys and flowering branches, formerly in the Collection of Benjamin F. Edwards III, is illustrated by Robert D. Aronson and Suzanne M.R. Lambooy, Dutch Delftware, including 'Facing East: Oriental Sources for Dutch Delftware Chinoiserie Figures', and highlights from the Mr. J. Visser Collection, Heemstede, and the Stigter-Gysberti Hodenpyl Collection, Singapore, Amsterdam, 2010, p. 84, no. 45, and was sold at Christie's, New York, 26 January 2010, lot 275.
