Born Paris, France, 1911. Studied at the Sorbonne, Paris, France, 1932-35, and the École du Louvre, Paris, France, 1936-37. Solo exhibitions include: Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1982-83; Museum of Modern Art, New York 1994-95; Serpentine Gallery, London, 1998; Galerie Hauser & Wirth, Zurich, Switzerland, 2000; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain, 2001; The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2001-02; Musée d'Art Moderne, Centre de Georges Pompidou, Paris, 2008; Galerie Karsten Greve, Paris, France, 2013. Winner of several awards including Academician of the National Academy, New York, and the Golden Lion, for a living master of contemporary art, 49th Venice Biennale, 1998. She died in New York, 2010.
