Note du spécialiste

The present work comes from the studio at Charleston. The piece of cloth behind the vase of flowers is a printed textile with the head of an actor by the Japanese artist Sharaku. Grant painted it several times in still-lifes and interiors. (see R. Shone, Bloomsbury Portraits: Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and Their Circle, London, 1993, pl. 186, p. 252)

We are very grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in cataloguing the present lot and lots 17, 30-31 and 33.
