A PAIR OF CLASSICAL PART-EBONIZED, BRASS-MOUNTED AND CARVED MAHOGANY LYRE-BACK CHAIRS

These chairs may have been owned by George Harrison (1762-1845), a Philadelphia merchant and naval agent, and his wife Sophia (Francis) Harrison (1768-1851) and displayed in their home at 156 Chestnut Street. While the source of this provenance is unknown, such chairs would have been consistent with the Classical fashions favored by Harrison, his wife and their circle of friends. Christie's previously sold a pair of labeled Lannuier card tables that also came from the Harrison house (Joshua Francis Fisher, Recollections (1864), p.188; Christie's, New York, 19 January 2002, lot 401).
