stamped with the panel maker's mark 'MV' of Michiel Vriendt (active 1615-1637) and the coat-of-arms of the city of Antwerp (on the reverse) in an English 18th century carved giltwood swept frame

Specialist note

A number of contemporary versions of Francken's original composition, signed and dated 1609, are recorded by Dr Ursula Härting (Frans Francken der Jüngere (1581-1642), Freren, 1989, pp. 276-7, no. 175). These include that in the Raudnitz Castle, Czechoslovakia, and a much larger painting, previously attributed to Hans Rottenhammer, which was offered in the Jeep sale, Bangel, Frankfurt, 16-17 September, 1920, lot 43.
