'Another feature of the early days were the Trafalgar Day dinners. On the evening of 21 October his friends would arrive from London, most of the cycling friends and in addition F.L. Emanuel the artist and James Bone of The Manchester Guardian. The dining table was laid out with porcelain and silver appropriate to the date of 1805 and down its centre were placed little flotillas of model ships, representing English and French forces. Busts of Nelson and Napoleon stood at either end of the spread and prisoner-of-war models in ivory and bone decorated the place settings. The health of George III and Queen Charlotte was drunk, the British Navy was toasted and then my Grandfather read accounts of the battle and the Admiral's death before the rest of the evening was spent in singing sea shanties.'

Six further dessert-knives, each engraved with a coats-of-arms
