'Quite early on in his life he had begun to assemble architectural drawings and plans that might serve him in his work as architect and historian. There was a folio of original designs by Robert Mylne, the celebrated architect and engineer, another one connected with the Victorian architect C. R. Cockerell, yet other finely executed designs by Sir William Chambers, James Wyatt, Soane, Vulliamy and Lancelot Brown. These were referred to professionally when a teasing problem had to be solved in one of his restorations or leafed through to provide inspiration for a small country cottage or a gazebo. The notion that an architect should have a great library of past-masters' work was endemic to classical art, Lord Burlington had used designs in this way, so had Sir John Soane, but my grandfather must surely have been the very last to do so.'
