The lion statant is used in the crests of several noble families such as the Percys, Dukes of Northumberland and the Fitzroys, Dukes of Grafton, however its unadorned appearance here (without coronet or standing on a chapeau, for example) suggests that in this instance its purpose was purely decorative.
