including: Betty liegend mit aufgestütztem Arm (Wietek 156), etching with drypoint and open-bite, 1912/13, on Strathmore Japan paper, signed and dated 12 in pencil; Betty liegend, mit Fächer und schwarzen Strümpfen (W. 158), etching with drypoint and open-bite, 1913, on Strathmore Japan paper, signed and dated in pencil, inscribed II. Dru.; Freundinnen (W. 211), etching with aquatint, 1923, on wove paper, signed and dated in pencil; Kauernder Mädchenakt (W. 213), etching with aquatint, 1923/24, on thick wove paper, signed in pencil, inscribed Zustandsdruck, a proof impression before the final state; and Erzgebirge I (W. 220), etching with aquatint, circa 1925, on wove paper, signed in pencil; all rare, all with margins, probably the full sheets, some light-staining, W. 156 with scattered foxing, generally in good condition

Specialist note

Georg Tappert (1880-1957) belonged to the first generation of German Expressionist, yet he never belonged to any group or circle and his achievements and influence would have been largely forgotten, were it not for the efforts of Gerhard Wietek, who tirelessly researched, catalogued and exhibited the work of this great experimenter and observer. A native of Berlin, born the same year as Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner, he was one of the driving forces behind the formation of the Neue Sezession and one of the most influential figures of the Berlin avant-garde. His colour monotypes and his etchings, in particular the nudes of his favourite model Betty, who seem to unite the sensuality of early Expressionism with the merciless gaze of Neue Sachlichkeit, count amongst the most original prints of the period.
