Specialist note
The present portrait hung in the Entrance Hall at Hambleden Manor and depicts Francis Newbery (1743-1818), a distinguished publisher, scholar and poet. It was doubtless this publishing and literary connection that attracted the attention of William Frederick Danvers Smith, 2nd Viscount Hambleden (1868-1928) when he purchased it in 1899.
