Specialist note

'In Frost's new work an overtly geometric (and somehow symbolic) form lies involved in the downward-moving rain of pigment gesturesa broad compositional structural statement lying behind the bead-curtain of dribbles, that gives the picture that power and punch, that three-dimensional focus and concentration of space that no purely Tachist picture ever exists' (P. Heron, 'London', Arts, volume 31, no. 9, June 1957, p. 63).

Irene Manton (1904-1988) was a British botanist, noted for her study of ferns and algae. She taught with Frost at Leeds University, where she was Professor of Botany from 1946-1969. In 1998, on the tenth anniversary of her death, the Biological Sciences building at the university was named the Irene Manton Building in her honour.
