Walter Steiner (his mark, not in Lugt, appears to have been on the old mount, according to the 1997 catalogue).

Specialist note

This early work, probably inspired by Michelangelo's Last Judgement, is likely to date from circa 1547-8 immediately after Cambiaso's return to Genoa after a period spent studying in Rome. The attribution was confirmed at the time of the 1997 sale by Mary Newcome Schleier.
