A 19th century gold mounted bezoar stone necklace
Each stone in filigree design cage work links to a wire clasp, approximately 88.0cm long, fitted case

The bezoar stone is a solid concretion found in the alimentary organs of certain ruminant animals, especially the bezoar goat, and was thought to have great curative powers, particularly against poisoning. Often taken internally in powdered form, the stones were also worn as an amulet, sometimes mounted in gold or silver jewellery, as an antidote against poisoning. Popular mostly in 13th to 17th century Europe.
