Specialist note

These chairs, with their distinctively Gillow toupie feet, are almost identical to a set at the Royal Albert Hospital, Lancaster and a set made for Earl Manvers at Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire, in about 1822. Chairs from each set are illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, London, 2008, vol. I, p. 220 and vol. II, p. 368.
