Ming Ju (b. 1938)

The Taichi series is one of Ju Ming's most famous works. Taichi Series: Arch (Lot 3478), derives from the two-person "Push Hands" move in Taichi. In the move, the two individuals facing each other actually leave a bit of space between their hands, but Ju Ming takes the flow of chi between the figures and incorporates it into the statue, thus breaking the boundaries of physical form and transcending the barrier between them, creating a cycle of give-and-take between the individuals that repeats itself indefinitely, imparting a greater sense of movement to the abstractness of the work. In tangible and intangible ways and through similarity of both form and spirit, the piece conveys Ju Ming's creative philosophy of "endlessness and boundlessness."
