Specialist note
Folio stands were widely adopted in country house libraries to store and support large books. One such design by Gillows for Ferguson & Co. dated 1828 is illustrated in Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. II, p. 99, pls. 645 and 646.
