A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY FOLIO STAND
IN THE MANNER OF GILLOWS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
With a ratchetted adjustable slatted and hinged support to each side above tapering turned reeded and foliate-carved supports, on platforms with lotus volutes and reeded bun-feet with inset castors, inscribed '57' and labelled 'SILURIAN'

Specialist note

Folio stands were widely adopted in country house libraries to store and support large books. One such design by Gillows for Ferguson & Co. dated 1828 is illustrated in Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. II, p. 99, pls. 645 and 646.
