CIRCA 1812, GILT SCRIPT FACTORY MARKS AND TITLE, INCISED L MARK
Painted by Swebach and signed lower right, with a military encampment, an officer on a prancing horse approaching soldiers at rest amongst haystacks, with figures and tents on a hillside in the distance and a dog in the foreground, within a burnished gilt band and a broad tooled gilt border of overlapping stiff leaves, the reverse inscribed Bivouaque peint par Swebach. 1812 Lefebvre Rue Amelot No. 64 a Paris in gold script (slight scratches to gilding)

Specialist note

Jacques-François-Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines (1769-1823), was a painter who worked at Sèvres and at prominent Paris porcelain factories including Dihl et Guerhard and Lefebvre. At Sèvres he was granted the unusual privilege of being allowed to sign his work 'Swebach' or 'Sw'. He specialised in military and equestrian scenes but is also known for his work on plates in the Sèvres Egyptian service following engravings of drawings of Egypt by Vivant Denon.
