Specialist note
In 1928, Pavel Tchelitchew was living in Paris and counted amongst his friends and patrons, Gertrude Stein, René Crevel and Edith Sitwell. He had met Diaghilev the year before and collaborated with him on the production of a ballet entitled Ode, which the Ballet Russes were to perform in 1928 in Paris and Monte Carlo, designing the cover for the season's program. Many of his drawings at this time reflected his interest in the performance artists of the Ballet Russes as well as his talent for theatre design.
