A PAIR OF PATINATED PLASTER FIGURAL TWO-LIGHT CANDELABRA

Humphrey Hopper (b. 1767) was the famed sculptor of the monument to General Hay in St. Paul's Cathedral. He attended the Royal Academy schools and in 1803 was awarded a gold medal for his sculpture group 'Death of Meleager'. His work consists of a wide range of decorative classical figures in plaster, terracotta and composition, usually designed as decorative lighting supports. A set of four figures by Hopper was supplied to William, 2nd Baron Bolton for Hackwood and placed in alcoves in the Dining Room at Hackwood Park, Hampshire and sold by the late 2nd Viscount Camrose, Hackwood Park, Christie's house sale, 20-22 April 1998, lot 159.
