EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The railed back above a padded seat covered in chinoiserie hand-painted floral ivory silk, on brass castors, with metal plaque numbered 'M364', previously caned; together with a pair of English simulated bamboo side chairs, circa 1935, each with spindle-filled back, upholstered en suite, with metal plaque numbered 'M295'
The sofa: 31 in. (79 cm.) high; 56 in. (142 cm.) wide; 25 in. (63.5 cm.) deep
The chairs: 36 in. (91.5 cm.) high; 17 in. (43 cm.) wide; 18½ in. (47 cm.) deep (3)

The sofa probably acquired by Dolly Mann for Edward James in the mid-1930s.
The side chairs probably commissioned from Norris Wakefield by Edward James, in the mid-1930s, for Monkton House, West Dean, Sussex.

Specialist note

Much of the seat furniture bought by Dolly Mann was covered in French hand-painted chinoiserie silk by Norris Wakefield (see note to lot 138).
