Specialist note
Inspired by the traditional ways of painting from which she nonetheless moves away, Gülay Semercioglu creates abstract works made of metal wires reflecting the surrounding light. By weaving and stretching thin coloured metal wires which she attaches to the support with small crosshead screws, the artist creates kinetic colourful abstractions that are reminiscent of monochrome paintings.
Filled with tension and rhythm, her works are like screens for contemplation and result from an enduring and intensive process during which the artist reveals her remarkable hand dexterity. By combining the Eastern tradition of carpet weaving and fabric production with visual elements of Western aesthetics, her works are intrinsically Post-Modern and stand between painting and sculpture, between art and craft whilst alluding to the artist's inspiration by Op-art, Colourfield painting, Minimalism and Constructivism.
