Specialist note
These four overdoors illustrate four emblems from the Empresas políticas o Idea de un príncipe político cristiano representada en cien empresas ('The Idea of a Christian political prince') published in 1640 by the Spanish diplomat and man of letters Diego de Saavedra Fajardo (1584-1648). In this erudite work, written for the son of Philip IV, he compiled a hundred short moral and philosophical essays, illustrated with emblems in the style of Andrea Alciato's Emblemata.
