A RUSSIAN AMBER CHESS SET
ATTRIBUTED TO ALEXANDER KRYLOV, LATE 20TH CENTURY
The opposing transparent and opaque sides modelled as Medieval figures, the bishops as courtiers, the knights as horses' heads, the rooks as castles, the pawns as dwarves
The king -- 2 in. (5 cm.) high; the pawn -- 1½ in. (3.8 cm.) high
Together with an amber veneered chess board, late 20th century, inset with squares depicting historic figures -- 2 in. (5 cm.) high; 9 5/8 in. (24.3 cm.) square

Specialist note

This chess set is reputed to be designed and carved by Alexander Krylov, the chief architect for the restoration of the renowned Amber Room in the Katherine Palace near St. Petersburg. Krilov, trained as an architect, is also a scholar and a master craftsman who has worked with amber for decades.
