Specialist note

Louis de Silvestre, famous for his portraits of royals and nobility in France, was invited by Frederick August II, prince-elector of Saxony, the later Augustus III of Poland, to the court of his father, August II the Strong, where he was to have a very succesfull carreer, painting both father and son on numerous occasions.

While this portrait of Frederick August is not signed, it would seem to be very close to the work of Louis de Silvestre, and may have been done by a pupil.
