KRISHNA SHAMRAO KULKARNI (1916-1994)

Krishna Shamrao Kulkarni was a pioneering modernist and founding member of the Delhi Chakra in 1948. Appointed visiting professor at Skidmore College in New York, 1969-72, and Vice-Chairman of the Lalit Kala Academi, he travelled and exhibited extensively worldwide, supporting his artistic philosophy: "I am one of those individuals who does not want to close my mind or perception from any happening in the world. I am completely open to new influences which brake my falling into any recognisable pattern or style." (Kumar Gallery, Kulkarni, 2005, p. 3) In Vrindaban, named after the town where Krishna spent his childhood, he is inspired by miniature painting, energizing the stylized foliage and providing a Cubist setting.
