A Pair of Embroidered Pillow Ends
(20th century)
Each circular pad embroidered in bright pinks and green on blue with lotuses and paired ducks, auspicious marriage symbols, within line and sawtooth borders; mounted in wood box frame on cloth with acrylic window
5¾in. (15cm.) diameter each approx.

These embroidered pads are the endpieces of a stiff bolster pillow for everyday use. In the typical bright colors of the Joseon folk tradition, the imagery is felicitous, here emphasized by the pairing of mandarin ducks, said to mate for life, and their chick. The sawtooth outer border is said to deflect misfortune.
