drypoint, 1863, on laid paper, third, final state, an atmospheric impression with selectively wiped tone, signed with the butterfly and inscribed imp on the tab, with narrow margins on three sides, a thread margin above, in very good condition

The female figure resting in a languid pose is Joanna Hiffernan, Whistler's mistress and model during the early 1860s. At this time, Whistler was a neighbour of Dante Gabriel Rosetti, the foremost exponent of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Whistler temporarily responded to his style, as can be seen in Weary, the most Pre-Raphaelite of all his etchings.
