CASE: the drum shaped case surmounted by a seated figure of Cleopatra besides a flaming torchère, on panelled base fronted by relief-cast neoclassical figures amidst scrolls, supported on four mythical sea horses atop a rouge griotte marble plinth on toupie feet DIAL: white enamel with pierced gilt hands MOVEMENT: twin-barrels with platform lever escapement and rack strike to bell

Specialist note

The present clock is based on one in the collection of the White House, with the movement signed by Robin. Robert Robin (1742-1799) was a well-known horloger at the end of the 18th century, who had his workshop in the Louvre. He supplied several clocks for Louis XVI and the Menus Plaisirs and after the Revolution, he became Horloger du Directoire. Another similar example can be found in the French Mobilier National.
