AFTER THE MODEL BY GUILLAUME BENNEMAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY
The rectangular top with gilt-tooled black leather within a moulded ormolu surround, above a central guilloche mounted frieze drawer flanked to each side by a three-drawer pedestal with ribbon-tied foliate trails above mille-raie panels, applied with lion-mask garland-hung handles, the back with false frieze drawers, on short square tapering legs
31 in. (79 cm.) high; 72 in. (183 cm.) wide; 34 in. (87 cm.) deep

Specialist note

The present bureau plat is based upon Guillaume Benneman's celebrated model executed in 1787 for the library of Louis XVI at Compiègne. The popular model was frequently copied and reinterpreted by many eminent ébénistes of the 19th century, including Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley and François Linke. The original now resides in the Louvre.
