Specialist note

Gabriel Caruana is one of Malta's most celebrated artists and among the first to work with clay in this modern age. Caruana comes from an artistic family and trained at the Malta School of Art and later in Perugia, Detroit and Faenza. A key moment in his life was meeting the influential artist Victor Pasmore, who told Caruana that he was on the right track with his work. This confirmation aided his career. They developed a friendship and Pasmore has several works by Caruana in his private collection. (also see lot 788)
