Specialist note
Alexander Phimister Proctor is one of America's most important sculptors of animals. He attended the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League, as well as the Acadèmie Julian. He was invited by Augustus Saint-Gaudens to collaborate and sculpt the horse for the statue of General John A. Logan, located in Grant Park, Chicago. Other casts of the present work are in the collections at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
